The Science of Spanish Cedar: Where mass-produced boxes rely on thin veneers, my humidors are crafted from solid Spanish cedar—chosen for its unmatched ability to preserve fine cigars.
This naturally hygroscopic wood acts as a mechanical “battery,” carefully absorbing and releasing moisture to maintain ideal conditions. When left unseasoned, it will draw humidity from your cigars to reach balance.
While some suggest wiping the interior with a damp cloth, I strongly advise against it. Sudden exposure to liquid moisture can introduce subtle warping, compromising the integrity of a precision seal.
Instead, I recommend the following two methods.
Option 1: The Wait
Ideal for preparing your humidor before gifting or travel
The Setup
Place two 84% RH Boveda seasoning packs inside your empty Afterglow humidor.
The Patience
Close the lid and let it rest undisturbed for 14 days. Do not open it—not even once. The dry Spanish cedar requires time to absorb moisture deep into its grain.
The Finish
After 14 days, remove the seasoning packs and replace them with your preferred 69% or 72% Boveda packs. Add your cigars—and enjoy.
Option 2: The Sponge
For those who want to prepare their humidor more quickly
The Preparation
Use a clean, new sponge with distilled water. Place it on a waterproof base inside the humidor to protect the cedar. Ensure no water can come into direct contact with the wood.
The Seal
Close the lid and leave it undisturbed for 48 hours. During this time, the Spanish cedar will absorb and retain the humidity deep within its grain.
The Transition
After 48 hours, remove the sponge and place a 69% or 72% RH Boveda pack into its tray. Add your cigars—and enjoy.
